COLOR THEORY: BLUE

January 26, 2016 Claire Worth
COLOR THEORY- Blue (5)

As far as favorite colors go, blue statistically ranks highest. It makes perfect sense- the blue sky above us is a pretty consistent factor in most people's lives (even here in grey San Francisco). It is also the color of the sea and is an easily distinguishable shade for the human eye. It is the color of trust, responsibility, sincerity, and serenity. It is used in 53% of world flags and has a broad history of use in political, religious and cultural settings. Aside from all that, it is like... really pretty. Case in point:

Despite its popularity, blue can be a tricky color to use in an interior setting because of the sheer number of different shades. I feel like the default choice is to go for baby blue (at least, this is what I've garnered from the thousands of hours of House Hunters I have logged over the years). Personally, I'm not that inspired by baby blue, but if you are - go for it! I am just saying that there are SO MANY options with this hue! Grey-blue, navy, blue with green undertones... Experiment! And if you aren't ready to commit to dark blue as a wall color, then try adding in a piece of art or furniture. Live with it and see if you like it!

HOW TO USE BLUE IN YOUR HOME:

  • Go all out with a rich navy wall color or a wild tile installation:

  • Not ready to go bold? Try bringing one blue piece into your design. It can be a light fixture, a piece of furniture, or even just some artwork or accessories:

  • You can't go wrong with blue and white. Play with pattern!

No matter what your research shows about color psychology, go with what YOU love. Color is so important and should be personal- so choose shades that make you feel comfortable, inspired and content. In the end, my advice is to be aware of the history and power of color, but trust your instincts and your own experience!

Where does the color blue show up in your home?

Always,

Claire

Cannot get over @undecorated_home's recent home tour on @dominomag πŸ‘πŸΌπŸ™ŒπŸ» It's the perfectly layered mix of glam & organic - the ornate rug on top of a sisal rug, the brass lamps paired with the modern black fixture, the velvet mixed with leather. I absolutely LOVE this look. What do you think?! #hometour #sodomino #designworthy
How fun is this color palette by @sarahakwisombe?! Love the black and white tile with the pink walls and bright scarlet sofa! It's just so fun πŸ™ŒπŸ» My tip for playing with bold colors and patterns is to keep one aspect of the design simple (in this project, the space plan is relatively simple - ie not a ton of furniture and accessories) Think you'd ever rock a bold look like this?! β™₯️🌸 #blackandwhite #designgoals #designworthy
CANNOT get over the bold contrast in this minx of a kitchen, designed by @cortneybishopdesign πŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘πŸΌ The patterned floor tile is the perfect starting point and the grey cabinetry, black range and white walls/counters tie the whole look together. I'm a HUGE fan of contrast in design. And this is an excellent way to do it!#kitchenminx #patternedtile #designworthy
Oooh this πŸ› is like an optical illusion in the best way. Still on the patterned floor tile kick with no end in sight πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ omg AND it's a #plasterbath. My two latest loves wrapped up into one fabulously color-blocked, high contrast space πŸ™ŒπŸ»πŸ‘πŸΌπŸ™ŒπŸ» Do you like or do you love? #ILove #bathroomgoals #designworthy (PS tag if you know the designer!)
